The Army–Navy Game: Tradition Beyond Football

There are rivalries in sports, and then there is the Army–Navy Game. An American tradition that transcends football and reaches into the heart of service, sacrifice, and pride. Every December, long after most college football rivalries have cooled, the cadets of West Point and the midshipmen of Annapolis take the field for a game that is as much about honor as it is about football. It’s not just another game; it’s a moment of unity, respect, and deep‑rooted tradition that speaks to the very spirit of the nation.

For anyone with a connection to the military, the Army–Navy Game carries an emotional weight you simply can’t manufacture. The players on both sidelines aren’t just student athletes they are future officers who will soon trade jerseys for uniforms. The intensity on the field is matched only by the mutual respect between the teams, a reminder that when the final whistle blows, they are all on the same side.

As an enlisted sailor, the game held a special place in my heart. I remember watching it while I served, surrounded by shipmates, all of us rooting passionately for Navy. It didn’t matter where we were stationed or what kind of week we had; for those few hours, the rivalry brought us together. Cheering for the Navy Midshipmen wasn’t just about school spirit—it was about representing our branch, our service, and the pride we carried being in the United States Navy.

I still watch the Navy Midshipmen. Watching Navy reminds me of the values we lived every day and the discipline, teamwork, resilience, and the bond shared by all who have served.

The Army–Navy Game is special because it celebrates not only competition, but commitment. It honors the legacy of those who came before and the promise of those who will serve after. And for those of us who serve—especially us sailors who have always pulled for Navy it is a tradition that continues to inspire pride year after year.

In the end, the game is more than a rivalry. It’s a reminder of service, sacrifice, and the enduring unity of America’s military. And no matter where life has taken me since my time in the Navy, I’ll always stand with the Midshipmen.

Go Navy, Beat Army!
